1. Visualization

The most basic level in the model is the ability to visualize.

This refers to a person’s ability to recognize, filter, and focus on relevant facets of an image. Concrete planar and spatial objects can be recognized within a pictorial scene by their contours, colors, and specific patterns. At this level, individuals master the separation of background from the relevant object and thus the appropriate filtering of visual information. Irrelevant and relevant pictorial information can be separated from each other and planar and spatial objects in different representational forms and views can be specifically recognized. The ability to visualize shows clear references to Frostig’s preception of figure-ground (Frostig, 1972, 1979).
